Protect your own money early by separating joint accounts and cards where you can. Then guide them toward professional support: a primary care doctor, a national gambling helpline or, for entrenched harm, a residential treatment program. None of this fixes things overnight. Every step reduces the damage while they find their way towards recovery.

Recognize the signs of a gambling ADDICTION

Gambling harm is not often something that detectable early on. It tends to builds through small and deniable changes: changes where money doesn’t add up, evenings end up being longer than they should, you see a defensiveness that wasn’t there before.

The things you need to watch for are:

Secrecy about money, time or where they’ve been

Borrowing from friends, family or lenders to cover losses

Selling possessions, dipping into a 401(k) or missing bill payments that were never a problem before

Mood swings, especially irritability or restlessness when they can’t gamble

Chasing losses with bigger bets, convinced the next win will fix everything

Withdrawing from people who used to matter to them

Try not to jump to conclusions over just one thing. It’s usually better to wait and see if a consistent pattern develops over a few weeks before you decide to act.

Understand what they’re going through

Gambling companies spend over £3.9 billion a year on marketing in the USA (5W PR), much of it built to make gambling look ordinary, sociable, even harmless. That framing makes it harder for the person gambling and the people around them, to notice when it’s stopped being either.

Gambling addiction is a medical condition that can get better with the right support. It is not your fault, nor is it theirs and there is nothing for them to be ashamed of, even if that shame feels overwhelming to them right now. It’s simply a health issue that responds to treatment and you don’t have to carry the weight of it alone.

How to talk to them about their gambling

Pick a moment when neither of you is stressed, rushed or likely to be interrupted.

Say what you’ve noticed in specific terms, not accusations: “I saw the letter from the loan company” is different from “you’re lying to me again.”

Try to listen more than you talk.

In order to help someone with a gambling addiction it’s important that you don’t make them feel cornered. Someone who feels cornered will defend the gambling whereas if you make that person feel heard, they might tell you what’s actually going on underneath it.

What to avoid saying

Skip ultimatums you’re not prepared to follow through on.

Skip comparisons to other people who “just stopped.”

Skip anything that sounds like you’re keeping score of every past mistake.

All of these approaches tend to shut the conversation down rather than open it up, so if you are there to help someone with a gambling problem, do your best to avoid these.

How to set boundaries with a gambling addict

Boundaries protect you, not them, and that’s the reason you need them. You need to decide in advance what you will and won’t do: whether that’s covering a bill, lending cash “just this once,” or letting them stay if money keeps disappearing from the house.

Write the boundary down if it helps you to keep to it. Tell them clearly, calmly and once. Then follow through, even when it’s difficult. This is the hardest part, but an unenforced boundary carries no weight or conequence.

Protecting your finances from someone’s gambling

If you share accounts, cards or a mortgage with someone who gambles, your finances are already exposed. Start by separating what you can: have your own current account, savings and any card that only you can access.

Ask your bank about blocking gambling transactions on shared accounts and cards. Most US banks now offer this. If joint debt has already built up, contact a a non-profit credit counseling agency, such as the NFCC or FCAA before it escalates. Neither charge for initial advice and they deal with this situation regularly.

Build a gambling safety plan for family and friends

A safety plan turns good intentions into something you can actually follow when things get difficult. Write down:

What you’ll do if they ask you for money

Who else you can call for support, so you’re not carrying this alone

What “getting worse” looks like for your situation specifically

One thing you’ll do for yourself each week, regardless of how their gambling is going

Share the plan with one other person you trust.

Encourage them towards professional treatment

Most states offer access to specialized problem gambling support and treatment funded through state health agencies, local non-profits, or certified addiction specialists. People can self-refer directly 24/7 by calling, texting, or chatting through the National Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-GAMBLER or 1-800-MY-RESET) or by speaking with a healthcare provider. Support extends to family members and loved ones affected by someone else’s gambling, including access to counseling and dedicated support groups like Gam-Anon.

Tools like BetBlocker and Gamban can help someone limit their own access to gambling websites and apps, which is a useful first step before or alongside therapy.

For gambling harm that hasn’t responded to outpatient support, residential treatment offers something outpatient care can’t: distance from the environment and habits that sustain it

However, it’s completely natural to worry about what happens when treatment ends and real life starts again. That’s why residential care isn’t about ‘hiding away’ from reality, it’s about preparing for the future.

Programs like The Retreat by Gordon Moody, offer a privately funded residential space to safely hit pause. Instead of just escaping daily temptations, the program focuses on structured therapeutic support throughout the stay. This ensures someone has the mental space and guidance to build the practical coping tools they will need to handle gambling triggers before they face them at home.

Look after your own wellbeing

When you help someone with a gambling addiction, it can be tiring in ways that are easy to underestimate. Constant vigilance, financial stress and repeated broken promises can take their toll on you and this can show up in the form of sleep, health and relationships with other people.

You don’t have to manage gambling harm alone:

GamAnon runs meetings specifically for family and friends affected by someone else’s gambling.

NCPG offers support from people with lived experience of gambling.

Gambling Therapy is a free global service run by Gordon Moody that has its own dedicated support for friends and family, that is available in multiple languages.

The Samaritans provide a free service that is available 24/7 that you can call on 988.

Kindridge Research Institute supports people bereaved by gambling-related suicide specifically.

Why Choose The Retreat by Gordon Moody

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1020" height="680" src="https://retreatbygordonmoody.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/how-to-help-someone-with-a-gambling-problem-1020x680.webp" alt="People holding hands showing support to each other.
